「独創性が高く後世に語り継がれる、心のこもった論文を世に送り出すこと」を信念に研究活動を行ってきた。単に欧米諸国を追随するのではなく、我が国の農学・環境微生物学の独自性を持続させるとともに、今後の海洋環境微生物学を、現在・未来の海洋生命圏の理解へと向かい人類社会に貢献する学問分野へと昇華させるため、単独の微生物における生命現象だけでなく、生物間の相互認識や相互作用といった“生物社会を通底する原理”の研究に取り組んでいる。世界に通用する高い倫理性とともに、農学に関する幅広い学識と海洋環境微生物学分野における高度の専門知識・研究能力を兼ね備えた人材を養成するため、講義や実験・実習および研究を通じて教育に尽力している。

研究テーマ

ごく最近まで無生物の世界だと考えられてきた深海や深部海底下に極めて豊かな生態系が存在することが明らかとなってきました。我々は世界各地の深海底熱水活動域をはじめとする海洋の極限環境を主たる研究対象とし、「地球を食べる」微生物の生理生態や進化をモデルに海洋生命圏を総合的に理解するための研究を行っています。

Rich microbial ecosystems exist in deep-sea and oceanic sediments, and even in rock deep inside Earth's crust, where not long ago it was thought that life could not exist. We have special interests in the ecophysiology and evolution of 'earth-eating' microorganisms inhabiting various extreme marine environments such as deep-sea hydrothermal fields, since it can be a useful model to understand the marine biosphere comprehensively.

Our projects include: 1) Microbial genomics, transcriptomics, and glycomics to better understand how marine microbes respond to their surrounding environments and how they interact with other organisms, and 2) Ecophysiological and population genetic analysis of marine extremophiles.
