肝炎ウイルスの研究をしている。学術研究の成果を患者さんの治療に活かせるよう日々邁進している。各種委員会にも参加し、大学の環境改善に勤しんでいる。教育に関しては、研究室の大学院生との共同研究の中で、実践的に研究能力を身につけさせることを目指している。

I am conducting research on hepatitis viruese. I strive continuously to contribute to development of new anti-virus strategies for the patients with hepatitis. Furthermore, I take part in several committees and work diligently toward the improvement of the environment of the university. As for education, one of my goals is to help graduate students acquire the practical skills needed to conduct joint research.

C型肝炎ウイルス(HCV)とB型肝炎ウイルス(HBV)の感染によって引き起こされる肝炎、肝硬変、肝がんなどの慢性肝疾患の根絶を目指し研究を始めた。分子生物学、細胞生物学、生化学などの様々な手法を用いて解析を進めている。ヒト肝細胞由来の新たな細胞を樹立して、立体培養法など種々の培養法を用いて、患者由来の肝炎ウイルスが感染し、増殖することが可能な培養系の構築を試みている。この培養法を用いてHCVの感染増殖機構を解析し、その一部を明らかにして、抗HCV薬開発に役立てている。

In order to eliminate the chronic liver diseases, such as chronic hepatitis, liver cirrhosis, and hepatocellular carcinoma, caused by infection of hepatitis C virus (HCV) and hepatitis B virus (HBV), I started to study those viruses. I have analyzed those viruses by using many various methods of molecular and cellular biologies as well as biochemistry. Recently, we have focused on the development of in vitro system for culturing hepatitis viruses, which permits the viral infection and proliferation, by using various cell culture systems, including three dimensional culture system, after establishment of new human hepatocyte-derived cells. I have clarified the part of HCV life cycle by this strategy and reported some candidates for new anti-HCV drug.
