亜鉛を中心とした必須微量ミネラルの健康機能の解明や、輸送・代謝に関わる分子の制御機構、病態との関わりとその分子機序について研究している。

The Kambe lab strives to understand the cellular and physiological functions of zinc by focusing on ZNT and ZIP transporter proteins, which play central roles in human zinc metabolism. The current study focuses on when, where, and how ZNT and ZIP transporters monitor cellular and systemic zinc concentrations and control influx and efflux of zinc ions across the biological membranes. Of particular interest are when, where, and how zinc-containing proteins/enzymes are metalated by zinc mediated by both transporters depending on the situation. Our goal is to elucidate these processes at the molecular level, which leads to a better understanding of human health and novel therapies for zinc-related diseases.

亜鉛は、タンパク質の構造因子、酵素の補因子、細胞内外のシグナル因子として生体機能に不可欠な必須微量栄養素です。この亜鉛の恒常性を維持するためには、ZIPとZNTという2つの亜鉛トランスポーターファミリーが重要な役割を果たしています。両亜鉛トランスポーターの生理機能を解析することで、亜鉛の多様な生理機能を解明し、健康増進に結びつける研究や、疾患の予防や治療に役立つ知見を明らかにすべく研究を実施しています。

My primary research focus is understanding the cellular and physiological functions of mammalian transporters of trace elements, in particular zinc. Current projects investigate: i) when, where, and how ZIP and ZNT zinc transporters monitor zinc concentrations in the cells, discriminate zinc from other cations, and control its influx and efflux across the biological membranes; ii) when, where, and how zinc-containing proteins/enzymes associate with and dissociate from zinc mediated by transporters depending on the various situation; iii) how zinc transporters or zinc-requiring enzymes are associated with disease pathogenesis; and v) establishing a new strategy to improve zinc nutrition to achieve good health in humans.
