私たちは日々新しい事を記憶していきます。しかも驚くべき事に、一旦記憶されたことは何十年にもわたって思い出すことが出来ます。このような記憶を脳の中に保持し続けるメカニズムは何でしょうか。私たちは特に、海馬という部分に着目し、研究を進めています。この部位では、一過性の刺激によって長期間シナプス反応が増強する、長期増強(LTP)という現象が知られています。私たちはLTPが記憶の細胞モデルと考え、その分子メカニズムを解明しようとしています。

We daily form new memory. Surprisingly, we can still recall old memory even decades later. What is the mechanism that allows us to form, store, and recall memory? We are interested in a brain structure called hippocampus. In this area, a brief but strong stimulation can cause a long-lasting change in synaptic transmission. We consider this phenomena, long-term potentiation or LTP, is a cellular counterpart of learning and memory and focus our effort to elucidating its molecular mechanisms.
