光合成、特に電子伝達鎖の柔軟な制御機構に興味を持っている。植物を材料にした生化学と分子生物学が専門であるが、物理や化学などの異分野の研究者や企業との研究交流を積極的に行うことで新しい切り口にチャレンジしている。植物が何億年もかけて完成させた光エネルギー変換システムを、急変しつつある地球環境と人類の利用にあわせて再デザインするのが目標である。

変動する環境下において、植物がいかに光合成の光エネルギー変換システムを最適化し、安定に利用しているかを明らかにすべく研究を行っている。1)光合成の酸素発生反応を担う光化学系II複合体の構造と機能、進化に関する研究、2)環境ストレス下における光合成電子伝達鎖からの活性酸素発生の抑制機構の解析、3)海洋性珪藻の遺伝子操作技術の開発と光合成機能の理解、それを利用した物質生産系の構築、などが現在の主要なテーマである。

The aim of our study is to understand how plants optimize and stably use the light energy conversion system for photosynthesis under fluctuating environments. The current major topics are: 1) Structure, function and evolution of photosystem II complexes responsible for the oxygen evolution reaction in photosynthesis, 2) Analysis on the suppression of ROS production from photosynthetic electron transfer chain under environmental stresses, 3) Development of genetic engineering techniques for marine diatoms, understanding of their photosynthetic functions, and construction of a material production system using these techniques.
