近年の環境問題の深刻化や化石資源の枯渇に伴い、経済発展と自然環境保全が両立した「持続可能な社会」の実現が求められています。地球上に降り注ぐ太陽光のエネルギーは莫大であり、地表に到達する総エネルギー量は我々人類の総消費エネルギー量の約1万倍以上とも言われ、我々が現実的に利用可能な量を見積もっても、なお100倍近くあるとされています。この太陽エネルギーの数%を、我々が利用可能なエネルギーへと変換できれば、人類の消費エネルギーのほぼ全てを賄うことも不可能ではありません。 我々の研究グループでは、将来のクリーンエネルギーとして期待される水素を、太陽光を用いて水から直接製造する「人工光合成」の研究を中心に、光エネルギーを用いて有害物質を分解無害化する「光環境浄化」、有用化合物の合成を行う「光ファインケミカル合成」などの研究を進め、これらに適用するための新しい光触媒系の開発を進めています。
