Elucidating the principles of animal walking dynamics and utilizing such knowledge for robots

被災地調査や惑星探査など、未知で過酷な環境でも頑健な自律移動能力を有するロボットの開発が求められてる。地球上の多様な環境で優れた適応能力を示す生物の歩行に着目し、生物の有する優れた運動知能の解明とその応用を目的とした研究を行っている。具体的には、生物の計測データの解析から仮説を立て、モデル化手法と動力学シミュレーション技術を介して、その仮説の検証や神経筋骨格系の機能解明を行い、得られる知見を工学的に具現化することで、優れた運動機能を示すロボットの開発を行っている。

Recently, there have been rising demands for the development of robots that can work in areas hardly accessible for humans, for such purposes as investigations in areas damaged by disasters or planetary exploration. We focus on the locomotion of animals on earth, which is an excellent ability to move even in complex environments using legs. Our goal is to elucidate the high motor intelligence of animals and to apply our discoveries to robot technologies. In particular, animal walking is a complex phenomenon of dynamics generated through interactions between the brain, body, and environment. We study the principles of its dynamics using mathematical modeling and dynamic simulation technologies. We are working to develop robots with superior motor functions by putting the knowledge obtained from our studies into reality through engineering.
