Tanya McCarthy has been working as an English instructor in Japan since 2002. She has also taught in China where she received her CELTA. Her research interests are Learner Autonomy, Self-Access Learning Centres, and Materials Development focused especially on Self-Directed Learning. She also works with junior and high school students teaching Intensive English Empowerment Programmes.

My research area has always centered around Learner Autonomy and Self-Directed Learning.I have published and presented my research internationally and am a member of various academic societies focused on helping learners to be more active in their learning. I am currently designing a Tandem program for young academics and researchers.
