My major is in Inorganic Solid State Chemistry and I have worked extensively in the synthesis and characterization of complex transition-metal oxide materials exhibiting magnetic and electric properties. On the side of the synthesis, my research has mainly focused in the preparation of metastable perovskite-structure materials by topochemical (structure preserving) methods. Such methods enable stabilization of thermodynamically metastable products of solid state reactions, by utilizing the different rates of mobility of cations with respect to anions or vice versa. Metastable materials often exhibit non-conventional oxidation states and coordination geometries, which in turn result in exciting magnetic and electric behaviour among physical properties. Recently, I have been exploring the application of topochemical synthetic approaches for investigation of the structural aspects which affect oxide-ion conduction in materials for potential applications in Solid Oxide Fuel Cells (SOFCs).

During my undergraduate studies at the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM), I was able to gain some research experience and learn different characterization techniques by taking part in a number of research projects from my first term. To obtain my BSc in chemistry I participated in the research project Synthesis and Characterization of Materials for Magnetic Refrigeration (PAPIIT, IN104310) in the Institute of Materials Sciences (IIM) at UNAM. I was awarded a research grant to carry out my thesis project, Synthesis, Structure and Magnetic Properties of the Manganite Series La0.80(Ag1-xSrx)0.20MnO3 (x = 0.00 – 1.00) with special focus on the magnetocaloric effect. The synthesis techniques for the preparation of the La0.80(Ag1-xSrx)0.20MnO3 (x = 0.00 – 1.00) series involved both ceramic and alternative ‘wet’ methods (modified according to the needs from the one reported by Pechini). The structural and chemical characterization of these materials involved laboratory X-ray powder diffraction, HRTEM imaging, TGA-DSC measurements, and XPS and EDS analyses. The magnetic characterization was carried out using vibrating sample magnetometry techniques, and thermogravimetry-magnetic susceptibility apparatus along with magnetoresistance apparatus. I carried out my doctoral studies in the group of Prof. Michael Hayward at the University of Oxford in the UK. My DPhil project involved synthesis techniques which utilize the different rates of ion diffusion in solid state transition metal oxide phases. By operating at low temperatures (<< 1000 ºC) it is possible to stabilize kinetic metastable products which preserve the main topology of the starting materials during a chemical change (a ‘topochemical’ process). This allows the preparation of materials which are otherwise inaccessible via conventional solid state ceramic methods. This approach has allowed me to prepare a variety of interesting metastable materials which I have been able to characterize using both standard Laboratory techniques (X-ray diffraction, TGA, titrations), as well as state-of-the-art central facilities (such as the neutron sources at the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory in the UK, and the ILL in France): After completing my doctoral studies I was granted a JSPS Postdoctoral Fellowship and joined the laboratory of Prof. Yuichi Shimakawa to work on the preparation and characterization of high-valence transition-metal oxides by using high-pressure techniques. Along with the exploration of the influence of cation substitution on the charge-transfer behavior in transition-metal oxides containing iron, the work has focused on researching cation-ordered structures exhibiting intriguing magnetic and electronic properties. An additional line of research during my JSPS focused on the exploration of the oxide-ion conductivity in perovskite and perovskite-related cation-ordered materials prepared via topochemical methods. Recent focus on the rates of extraction and incorporation of oxygen-ions in cation-ordered materials has recently turned into a successful proposal which enabled me to secure a position as a project specific assistant professor at the Research Unit for the Development of Global Sustainability at Kyoto University.
