業務に関しては、部局(iCeMS)の解析センター バイオ解析部門(iCeMS Analysis Center, Bioanalysis Unit)の運営と機器の管理に携わっており、博士研究員・大学院生に光学顕微鏡技術を指導している。自身で新規の光学顕微鏡装置・測定技術を開発し、それらを部局内、国内外の共同研究者に速やかに提供して、イメージングによる細胞科学研究発展に貢献することを目指している。

I am responsible for managing and running the facilities in Bioanalysis Unit of iCeMS Analysis Center, and for educating post-doctoral researchers and graduate students on microscopic imaging techniques. I aim at making newly-developed microscopic technologies available not only to the researchers in iCeMS but also to the worldwide scientific community, for the further advancement of cellular science based on imaging.

Revealing plasma membrane compartmentalization and regulation of molecular function by developing ultrafast single-molecule imaging

私が世界に先駆けて取り組んで来た「生きている細胞中での1分子イメージング技術」をさらに発展させ、細胞膜が働く機構を解明することを目指している。現在の目標は、蛍光標識された2種類以上の膜分子を、同時に、1分子ごとに、分子サイズの空間精度(10 nm)で、現存する蛍光発光団を使ったときの究極速度(33マイクロ秒分解能)で観察し、100 nm程度の仕切りが入った細胞膜での短寿命複合体の形成と分解、分子の活性化を、1分子レベルで、手に取るように見ることである。

I have been making efforts to develop single-molecule imaging techniques in living cells, and to use the methods for understanding the functional mechanisms of the cellular plasma membrane. I am currently aiming at dual/triple-color simultaneous single fluorescent-molecule observations with a 10-nm (molecular size) spatial precision and the world’s fastest 33-microsecond temporal resolution (the ultimate frame rate for single fluorophores available today), to reveal the mechanisms for the formation and function of signaling molecular complexes at the level of single molecules in the plasma membrane compartmentalized into ~100-nm diameter domains.
