磁気嵐とサブストームは地球近傍の宇宙空間でおこる最大規模の擾乱現象である。サブストームを特徴づけるのはオーロラの急激な増光とその拡大である。サブストームが起こると磁気圏の構造が一変するため、磁気圏を理解する上でサブストームの理解は不可欠である。一方、磁気嵐を象徴するのはリングカレントと呼ばれる地球を取り囲む巨大な電流である。高精度計算機シミュレーションと観測データを組み合わせ、性質の異なる領域が互いに連携しながら磁気嵐とサブストームという宇宙の嵐が発達する様を明らかにしようとしている。

Magnetic storms are one of the largest phenomena that occur in the near-earth space. The magnetic storms are characterized by the ring current. By conducting empirical research based on simulation and observation, I am investigating the magnetic storms and auroras from the view point of the ring current and its coupling to the ionosphere.
