Structural analysis of ABC proteins
Overview of your research

ABC proteins are involved in host defense mechanisms, glucose homeostasis, and lipid homeostasis. Defects in their functions cause various diseases, suggesting that they play very important roles for human wellness. Although their predicted secondary structures are very much alike and share well-conserved nucleotide binding domains, they have divergent functions and can be classified as transporters, channels, and regulators. Furthermore, some ABC proteins, such as ABCA1 and ABCG1, are proposed to be involved in the re-organization of raft-like membrane meso-domain. However, the mechanisms of their functions are still not clear. Thus, determination of three-dimensional structure at high resolution is important to elucidate their functions. The findings would allow us to design integrated functional architectures of physiologically important ABC proteins.
