「役に立つ研究」を要請されて京都大学生体医療工学研究センター教員となり,様々な医療技術の開発研究とその実用化を企業との共同研究にて行っている.一方において,「自分事」を徹底的に問い続けるアート視点の教育が,「役に立つ」ためのもっとも基本的な教養であると考え,アート視点の工学教育への応用に関しても活動を行っている.たとえば,「生きることの迷惑を積極的に受け入れられる」ことを,医療の一つの目標と設定して,アーティストたちが自分たちのアート活動に伴う迷惑を積極的に受け入れられるために常識として行っている様々な作法:異なる世界観の尊重、本当にやりたいことへの徹底性,みずからの「行為」よりも,おのずからの「しぐさ」を尊重する姿勢,など,,の,教養教育としての可能性を論じている.
