顕微鏡的手法と生化学的手法を組み合わせ木材細胞壁の形成過程を調べてきた。リグニン前駆物質の生合成や重合に関わる酵素に対する抗体を作製し免疫電子顕微鏡法でそれらの局在を調べ、細胞壁が木化するメカニズムを明らかにした。木質資源のバイオエタノール化に関しては、様々な前処理効果を形態学的に評価しエタノール増産への提案を行った。近年では、二酸化炭素固定能を増強した樹木の木部形成を解析している。

木材細胞壁の主要な成分であるヘミセルロースがゴルジ装置内でどのように合成され細胞壁に輸送されるのか、そして堆積したヘミセルロースはどのような機能を有しているのかを解析する。また、リグニン前駆物質は細胞内でどのように合成され、どのように細胞壁へと輸送され、重合するのかを解明する。さらに、二酸化炭素固定を促進した樹木における木部形成について調査する。
