Personal Profile
(English)
I find it extremely difficult to precisely describe my research interest, because my research work traverses across disciplinary boundaries. Generally speaking, I am sociologically inclined, but also interested in philosophy, anthropology and other disciplines. But if I were to force myself to succinctly summarise my scholarly interest, it seems to centre on the following two clusters: 1) globalisation of education practice and policy and 2) globalisation of educational knowledge and research. Perhaps what might characterise my work is the distinct standpoint that I take, which is informed by what is generally known as decolonial/postcolonial thoughts. It is decolonial/postcolonial in that it raises uncomfortable questions about the nature of knowledge we produce about education and how we go about producing it, both of which, in my view, remain constrained by the continuing legacy of colonial relations in knowledge production on a global scale. So, whether discussing Japanese education practice and policy, Japanese education research in general, or colonial entanglements of the "founding fathers" of Comparative & International Education, my work seeks to expose and challenge the colonial vestages that continue to constrain our ability to imagine education and educational research otherwise.
