 京都大学農学部を卒業後は大学院の修士課程・博士課程に進学し学位を取得しました。その後日本学術振興会特別研究員に採用されましたが、2年の満期を終える直前に農学部の助手として採用されました。修士の学生時代の1984-85年に交換留学生制度を利用し米国ウイスコンシン大学に留学し、Bavister博士の元で、ハムスター初期胚の2-cell Blockの研究に従事し、世界で初めてハムスター初期胚を1細胞期から胚盤胞期胚まで培養することに成功しました。  助手時代の1994年にも米国カリフォルニア大学ロサンゼルス校に留学する機会を得て、SV40ウイルスの核移行に関する研究に従事しました。  現在はこれらの経験を生かして、マウス初期胚の発生に関する研究に従事しています。

Studies on gene expression in mammalian oocytes and preimplantation embryos

 ほ乳動物初期胚の発生は受精によってスタートするが、受精前では卵母細胞、精子とも遺伝子発現が停止した状態である。受精を経て初期胚は自ら遺伝子発現を開始するが、これは胚性ゲノムの活性化と呼ばれこの活性化が起こるまでは、卵母細胞内に蓄えられた転写産物やタンパク質によって発生が制御されている。これらの遺伝子の中には卵母細胞特異的に発現を開始するが、受精後の初期発生で機能する遺伝子がいくつか同定されており、母性効果遺伝子と呼ばれている。これらの遺伝子を含め、卵母細胞および初期胚で発現する遺伝子が初期発生をどのように制御しているか、また胚性ゲノムの活性化やそれ以降に発生を制御する遺伝子がどのように発現制御させているかをエピジェネティクスの観点から研究している。

Development in mammals starts with fertilization. Before fertilization gene expression is cmpletly silenced in both oocytes and spermatozoa. Several hours after fiertilization gene expression starts in zygotic genome in the mouse and the first gene expression after fertilization is called zygotic gene expression (ZGA). Until that moment development is controlled by the factors accumulated in oocytes. Several oocyte-specific genes are identified to function only after fertilization and these genes are called maternal effect genes.My research projects are to investigate how do the genes expressed oocyte-specifically or the genes expressed after fertilization function to controll preimplantation development and to clarify how does the gene expression at ZGA or after fertilization controlled epigenetically.
