メタン、メタノール、ホルムアルデヒドなどのC1化合物を利用する微生物を対象に、代謝、細胞生理、遺伝子発現制御の分子基盤を解明し、自然界における生理・生態と炭素循環における役割を明らかにするとともに、C1微生物やその細胞機能を利用した有用物質・有用タンパク質生産技術の開発や環境浄化技術の開発などの応用機能開発研究を行っている。
