1989年兵庫県立長田高等学校卒業、1989年京都大学農学部水産学科入学、1993年同学科卒業、1993年京都大学農学院水産学専攻修士課程入学、1995年同修士課程修了、1998年京都大学農学院水産学専攻博士後期課程単位取得の上退学。1997年日本学術振興会特別研究員。1998年より福井県立大学助手、講師を経て2008年より京都大学農学研究科准教授、現在に至る。研究は、シアノバクテリアとそれに感染するウイルスの生理・生態と分子生物学。釣りをこよなく愛する。

水圏には膨大な数の未知の微生物ウイルスが存在する。ゲノム科学的手法によりこのウイルスの生存戦略・生態を明らかにし、その地球規模で環境に及ぼす影響、宿主の遺伝的構造に及ぼす影響の解明を目指している。また、ラン藻に感染するウイルスの感染機構・耐性獲得機構と生態学的相互作用を解明し、これを応用したラン藻による有用物質生産系の開発を目指している
