Overview of the research
(Japanese)
哺乳類神経系の発生生物学、幹細胞生物学、そして成体脳の可塑性について研究してきた。神経発生研究においては、bHLH型転写因子による幹細胞の増殖・分化制御に着目してきた。また、神経系の可塑性については、成体脳において神経細胞が新生して神経回路に組み込まれるという現象(ニューロン新生)に着目して研究を行って来た。その背景には、神経系の発生・形成機構を明らかにする事で、神経系の作動原理の理解が深まり、我々人間の精神活動の一環が垣間見えることへの期待がある。また、神経発生研究に加えて、ニューロン新生という脳の可塑的性質を研究する事で、哺乳類の脳機能の発達・発現がどこまで先天的・遺伝的に規定されており、どこからが後天的・環境因子による影響を受けるのかについて、多くの予想外の知見を得ることができ、今後も発展させて行きたいと考えている。

I have studied neural development, stem cell biology, and plasticity of the brain. Especially, my research focus is bHLH transcriptional factors and neurogenesis in the postnatal/adult brain.
