温帯果樹の多くは、夏に花芽を分化させたのち、春まで開花せず、越冬時には活動を休止している。休眠とよばれるこの現象は冬季の低温に対する防御反応のひとつであり、休眠から覚醒し開花するには一定時間以上の低温に遭遇する必要がある。近年の気候温暖化によって、この低温要求量が満たされず開花が不揃いになるなどいくつかの問題が生じている。現在、我々が最近単離した休眠と同調的な発現挙動を示すMADS-box転写因子を中心にした休眠制御シグナル伝達の機構解明をおこなっている。 また、果樹の花成制御をテーマに、新たな作型や効率的栽培手法の開発あるいは花成の人為的制御をめざして、ブルーベリーやレイシを材料に圃場に根ざした研究もおこなっている。また、環境変動などの外的要因が果実の機能性成分に与える影響に関しても興味をもっている。
