ヒトへの進化の観点から、遺伝子およびゲノムに関して、構造や機能の変化の研究を行っています。  主な対象は、類人猿(チンパンジー、ゴリラ、テナガザルなど)、旧世界ザル(アカゲザル、ミドリザルなど)、新世界ザル(マーモセット、リスザル、ヨザルなど)です。  必要に応じ、マウス・ニワトリ・ツメガエル・メダカ・ゼブラフィッシュ等のモデル生物も調べます。
Overview of the research

最近の個別の研究テーマは、【1:ヒトの染色体】ヒトと類人猿の共通祖先には、染色体端部に大きな反復配列があった。これがヒトでは消失し、類人猿では残っている。 →ヒトでなぜ消えたのか?  【2:夜行性】中南米の森に棲むヨザル(夜猿)は、昼行性から夜行性に移行した。移行に伴い、視細胞の中に微小レンズを獲得し、夜間視力が向上した。 →獲得はどのような経過で進行したか? →他の霊長類(たとえばヒト)でもこれが起こり得るか?  【3:眼の進化】網膜にある視細胞は細長く、いちばん奥で光を感じる。光は、そこに到達する前に、細胞核を通過する。通過は無駄な散乱をもたらすはずで、不合理な構造といえる。 →脊椎動物の祖先は夜行性であったとすると、これはむしろ合理的。この考えは正しいか?  【4:稲作の影響】弥生人が約3千年前から、稲作を日本列島に広めた。メダカがこれに伴って日本列島に広がったとする説がある。 →この説は正しいか?  【5:生存戦略】正しいとしても、メダカは淡水魚であるため、別の水系に自身では移動できないはず。 →卵が付いた水草を水鳥が運ぶ(つまり、メダカは空を飛ぶ)のではないか? →卵に長い付着糸があるのは、生存戦略か?
