福岡県北九州市出身。1973年福岡県立小倉高校卒業、同年京都大学農学部入学、1977年同卒業、同年京都大学大学院農学研究科修士課程入学、1979年同修了。1981年、同博士後期課程に在学中に、京都大学農学部助手に採用され、1992年同助教授、2007年同教授。現在、農学研究科研究科長。京都大学での研究教育に尽力するなかで、さまざまな国際交流活動に従事。国際協力活動、種々の学術調査をはじめ、近年では、ILAS セミナー(海外、旧国際交流科目)、大学の世界展開力強化事業など、学生交流プログラムも実施している。

Born in Kitakyushu city, Fukuoka Prefecture. In 1973, graduated from Fukuoka Prefectural Kokura High School and entered Faculty of Agriculture, Kyoto University. In 1977, graduated from that Faculty on 1977 and entered Master Course, Graduate School of Agriculture, Kyoto University. In 1979, completed the course and graduated and continued to study in the Doctor Course, Graduate School of Agriculture, Kyoto University. In 1981, adopted as assistant professor in Faculty of Agriculture, Kyoto University. Promoted to associate professor in 1992 and to Professor in 2007. Now, Dean, Graduate School of Agriculture, Kyoto University. Responsible for international relations. Various international activities, including own oversea field surveys, international programs and international student programs.

熱帯における持続的な農業生産のために必要不可欠な、地域の農業資源や営農体系とその動態の評価を、東南アジア大陸部を中心に行っている。また、高温・乾燥・土壌の塩類化・湛水など、熱帯地域におけるさまざまな環境ストレスに対する、作物の耐性メカニズムの解明に関する研究、さらには、主として熱帯アジアで伝統的に利用される作物の起源・伝播の過程に関する研究を進めている。

I am studying the dynamics of local agricultural resources and agricultural systems and their evaluation, indispensable for sustainable agricultural production in the tropics. In addition, I am studying physiological and ecological mechanisms of tolerance to various environmental stresses, such as heat, drought, soil salinization and water logging, in the tropical crops. Crop evolution of tropical crops mainly utilized in tropical Asia is also one of my major subjects.
