1950年、石川県生まれ。大阪市立大学医学研究科修了、医学博士。京都大学医学部助教授を経て、弘前大学医学部教授。2006年より同大学院保健学研究科放射線生命科学分野長。2010年5月より京都大学生存圏研究所・特定教授。総務省「生体電磁環境研究推進委員会」委員、日本学術振興会未来開拓学術研究推進事業「強磁場下の物質と生体の挙動」プロジェクトリーダー、IARC(国際がん研究機関)ワーキンググループメンバー、WHO(世界保健機関)タスクメンバー、ICNIRP(国際非電離放射線防護委員会)第2常設委員、国際生体電磁気学会(Bioelectromagnetics Society)理事など歴任。専門は電磁場生命科学・放射線生物学。遺伝子発現、突然変異、シグナル伝達などを中心とした細胞・遺伝子レベルの電磁場影響を研究。主な著書に「電磁場生命科学」(京都大学学術出版会)、「放射線医科学―生体と放射線・電磁波・超音波―」(共編著学術出版センター)、「Advances in electromagnetic Fields in Living Systems, Vol.5, Health Effects of Cell Phone Radiation」(Springer)ほか。

I was born in Yamanaka Hot Springs, Ishikawa Prefecture, and I like to bathe because I grew up in a hot springs area. Whatever I decide to do, I do it to an extreme! I am a picky eater and I especially dislike cheese, vinegar, kimchi, and fermented soybeans. I love fish and I go to the fish section of a supermarket every weekend. Whenever I first visit a town in Japan or overseas, the first place I go to is the market. As for education and research, at present I am struggling to establish the multidisciplinary field of the life sciences of electromagnetic fields.

我々の生活環境には、医療現場における直流強磁場のMRI、高圧線や家電製品からの商用周波変動電磁場、IHクッキングヒーターからの中間周波数帯電磁場、携帯電話を代表とした高周波電磁場などがあり、電磁場環境における生体影響のメカニズム解明と理解が大きな社会的要請となっている。これまで、電磁場曝露による細胞や遺伝子レベルでの明確な応答を定量的に解析し、線量-効果関係に基づくしきい値の推定ならびに電磁場に対する分子生物学的な応答のメカニズム解明を目的として研究を行ってきている。さらに、生命科学的に明確な電磁場効果については、医療・健康面における積極的な活用を探究している。影響評価の観点では、遺伝毒性(染色体異常、遺伝子突然変異、DNA損傷など)、遺伝子発現やシグナル伝達機構などの電磁場応答の有無やその機構について研究成果を発表してきた。また、医療応用面では、再生・移植医療における基礎研究として、電磁場によるバイオ人工膵の活性化などの成果を発表してきた。また、WHO, IARCやICNIRPのメンバーとして電磁場の生体影響について、国際的評価会議に参加している。

Many kinds of electromagnetic fields exist in current living and working environments. These may be alternating electromagnetic fields of common frequencies, strong static magnetic fields, such as those generated using MRI in medical institutions, and (modulating) high frequency electromagnetic fields generated by the rapid and widespread use of mobile phones. Furthermore, considering the future development of linear motor cars and the need for electric power storage, there is likely to be public demand to clarify the mechanisms underlying the biological effects of electromagnetic fields. Rapid development of the life sciences has produced evidence of the biological effects of magnetic fields, i.e., events that were previously considered of vague origin can now be shown to be due to a positive biological response caused by the influence of strong magnetic fields.The goal of our work is to estimate a threshold value based on the dose-effect relationship of a given biological effect with the strength of a magnetic field. The public has demanded this information. We further want to clarify the molecular biological mechanisms that underlie these effects, especially in cases where the magnetic field effects have already been confirmed, and we would like to investigate the potential use of magnetic fields in the medical and healthcare fields.
