1972年私立修道高等学校卒業、1972年京都大学農学部農芸化学科入学、1977年同学科卒業、1977年京都大学大学院農芸化学専攻入学、1982年同博士課程修了。1982年農学博士、同年京都大学農学部農芸化学科植物栄養学研究室助手、1994年同助教授、2006年同教授、2010年より理事補、総合地球環境学研究所客員教授、現在に至る。

植物の無機栄養元素、特に窒素、ナトリウム、ホウ素の機能に関する研究。熱帯東南アジアの農業研究。
Overview of your research
(Japanese)
高等植物は土壌から14の無機元素を吸収して生育する。これらの必須栄養元素のうち、窒素、カリウム、ホウ素の機能について研究している。特に窒素は農業において収穫量を支配する肥料として、大気中の窒素をアンモニアに変換して施用される。しかし人口増加による施肥量、農業生産量の増加は地上環境の富栄養化をもたらした。環境負荷を低下させつつ収量を増加させる方策について検討を進めている。またホウ素過剰とカリウム欠乏に耐性をもつイネの育種を進めている。
