動物(主として昆虫)の生理学、行動学の研究を、体内のメカニズムと野外での意義の両方に関心を持って進めている。教育に関しては、大学院生を育てることを中心に、学部教育においても双方向性のコミュニケーションを心がけている。国内のいくつかの学会役員を務めるとともに、国際昆虫学会議評議員を8年間勤め、日本の昆虫学の国際的貢献に努力してきた。

Overview of the research
(Japanese)
これまで「動物はどのようにして季節変化に対応しているのか」という質問に答えることを目的として研究してきた。対象は主として昆虫などの無脊椎動物であり、とりわけ、(1)生活史、(2)光周性、(3)概年リズムに関心をもってきた。現在もっとも興味をもつ現象は、「生物学的時間設定」である。動物がどのような季節に、あるいはどのような時間に決まった活動を行うのか、そしてそれはどのようなしくみでもたらされるのかを明らかにし、野外でどのような意義があるのかを議論したい。

I have been studying on seasonal adaptations in invertebrates mostly in insects. Currently I am interested in the biological timing mechanism more broadly.
