1979年に京都府立大学農芸化学科を卒業し,ただちに京都大学農学研究科農芸化学専攻農薬化学講座に進学.1982年9月から同専攻の助手に採用され,助教授(2002年9月),准教授(2007年4月)を経て現在に至る.1988年に京都大学農学博士の称号を得る.1990年11月から1992年11月までの2年間,さらに1995年6月から12月までの半年間の2度,カリフォルニア大学デービス校へ留学.

昆虫特異的な生理現象である脱皮・変態を阻害する剤,いわゆる昆虫成育制御剤の構造活性相関研究を中心とした研究を行っている.特に,脱皮ホルモン様活性化合物については,その受容体タンパク質の遺伝子クローニングを行って,タンパク質の合成も行った.それ以外に,サソリの毒液に含まれる毒素の探索と構造決定,植物に含まれるステロイドホルモンの作用を模倣する化合物の分子設計を行っている.
