代謝学の中でも、主に糖尿病や病態栄養学の研究、診療、教育を専門としている。日本糖尿病学会常務理事、日本病態栄養学会理事、日本内分泌学会理事。また、日本糖尿病協会理事、京都府糖尿病協会会長として、国内や近畿、京都府内の糖尿病療養指導の充実にも力を入れている。2015年度~2018年にかけて、京都大学医学部附属病院の病院長を務めた。
