I study dynamics of fertilizer elements in the soil-crop systems for sustainable food production. Also I am interested in indigenous farming systems, especially in their role for the maintenance of soil fertility.

土壌から植物への養分供給の仕組みを明らかにして、肥料利用効率の改善と環境負荷の軽減に貢献する。土の中の養分量を測定するだけでなく、植物根と養分との位置的関係や養分の動きやすさにも注目している。

I study the processes of supply of nutrients from soil to plants. I pay attention not only to the content of nutrients in soil but also to the their mobility toward roots.

農業生態系の中で土壌を巡る栄養塩類の動態を評価することを通じて、環境負荷を軽減し、かつ収量性を最大にする土壌管理方法について研究を行ってきた。土壌中の生物とその周辺土壌との界面(根圏、残渣圏)というミクロスケールでの養分動態に注目するとともに、より大きな圃場、地域スケールでの研究にも取り組んでいる。最近は、農法の持続性と地力維持の仕組み、そして肥料元素に関する知識や分析手段に乏しい人(例えば農家や子供)の有する土壌や地力に対する考え方に興味を持っている。そして、これらのテーマを解明あるいは理解するための実験手法を考案することも重要な課題だと考えている。その一つとして、私たちの五感による土壌評価(色や手触り)は、室内実験で得られる土壌特性値とどのような関係にあるのかを明らかにしたい。

My main research topic is to evaluate and control the dynamics of nutrients in the agroecosystems at rhizosphere, field and regional scales.
