Overview of your research

熱帯林を中心に、植物生態学的な研究を、形質の種間比較、種内変異、環境応答、などをキーワードとして展開する。特に、実生更新の機能生態学では、生存と成長のトレードオフの基盤となる形質の違いについて、世界をリードする研究成果を上げてきた。近年では、ケイ素の利用において、熱帯樹種の間に能動的蓄積から排他までの大きな違いがあることに着目し、その系統地理的パターンを明らかにする研究も行っている。さらに、熱帯林の生物多様性維持機構を機能的に理解することから、熱帯林生態系が気候変動は人為的な撹乱にどのように応答していくか、そして、その知見を熱帯生態系の保全にどのように役立てるかについて、社会学的な要素も考慮する研究などにも、学生指導や共同研究として従事している。

For over three decades, I have conducted plant ecological research, especially in tropical forests. My main research topics include functional trait variations within and among species, plant responses to temporal and spatial variations of environmental factors. In particular, my research on growth-survival trade-offs in seedling regeneration of forest tree species has been widely recognised. Recently, I am very interested in differences in tropical tree species in their silicon utilisation patterns, from this that actively accumulate high concentrations of silicon in leaves and other tissues to those thot avoid silicon entry into the roots. I am currently working to reveal phylogenetic and biogeographical patterns of silicon accumulation by plants. In order to apply my expertise in functional ecology of biodiversity maintenance in tropical forests, I am increasingly engaged in collaborative research projects and advise students in topics on sustainable use and conservation of tropical forests.
