成熟哺乳動物の中枢神経系は複雑なネットワークを構成しているが、その根幹を為す神経軸索は一旦損傷を受ければ再生しにくいと考えられている。しかし、脳ラクナ梗塞患者の麻痺が改善する事からも、神経ネットワークの再構築は不可能な訳ではない。当研究室では脊髄損傷後の軸索再生の誘導を研究する中で、損傷部に異常な軸索断片が集積してグリア細胞の突起と複合体(軸索ーグリア複合体)を形成することを発見し、その除去により損傷部を超える軸索再生が誘導できることを示した。さらに軸索再生機序について研究している。

In adult mammalian central nervous system (CNS), severed axons hardly regenerate across the lesion site due to intrinsic and extrinsic factors. In studying the microenvironment of the injury site, we found an abnormal axon-glial complex (AGC), a novel barrier for axon regeneration, and achieved a successful axon regeneration in adult rat spinal cord through an early elimination of the AGC from the lesion site. We are further studying mechanisms underlying this phenomenon.
