Personal Profile
(English)
I am a behavioral ecologist working predominantly on the intersection between animal behavior and parasitism. Though with humble beginnings on the prairies of North America, I was always drawn to exotic places with their suites of charismatic species. Fortunately, my work has since taken me to these far-off places, where I've worked at field sites in Central America, West Africa, East and Southeast Asia and even Antarctica. I have studied primates, mainly, but also seabirds (penguins) and a few other animal species over the years. Students in my lab almost always combine field and laboratory work to enrich their experiences. I teach a variety of courses related to behavioral biology and am a strong proponent of critical thinking, analytical reasoning and the communication of science. Oh, and I host and produce a podcast called The PrimateCast.

Overview of the research
(English)
Host-Parasite Ecology and Systems Dynamics in Transitioning Ecosystems Here, we study how anthropogenic pressures might induce changes in host-parasite relationships by considering the dynamics of ecological communities in situ. A current model system for this work is in Sabah, Malaysian Borneo, where we investigate host and parasite assemblages in relation to varying levels of human influence, e.g. for oil palm development. This work is supported by a grant-in-aid from the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS) #2 0 H 0 3 3 3 3 (formerly #16H06181 ). Expansion to host-parasite community assemblages allows for tests of the relationship between host and parasite biodiversity, and assessment of risks to both wildlife conservation and public health. o accomplish our aims, we are using a diverse set of methods that include field work and sampling, traditional and molecular parasitology, social, ecological and spatial data analysis and modeling, as well as comparative literature surveys to gain a broader perspective.  Parasites & Host Behavior, with Special Emphasis on Social Systems Evolution Here, I explore the various links between animal behavior and parasitism, including avoidance strategies, avenues for social immunity and patterns and mechanisms of parasite transmission in host social networks. Theoretical aspects of the work involve simulation and/or agent-based modeling - themselves drawing on empirical networks and infectious disease dynamics - to predict the spread of infection through groups and how this might change under varying conditions of social structure and the environment. Long-term work with Japanese macaques and their gastrointestinal helminth parasites provides a useful platform for this research, which has recently been combined with deworming experiments in a free-living population to better understand the impacts of infection on host individuals and populations.  Behavior analysis of Indicator species for global change and animal health, welfare & conservation In this line of research, I work on animal-derived location and behavior tracking data to make inferences about animal and environmental functioning. Much of this work has merged novel techniques, such as temporal fractal analysis applied to data collected via bio-logging (i.e. using animal-attached data recording devices). My research has now provided multiple links between parasitic infection or other challenges and complexity loss in a variety of species, from primates to penguins, and I continue to apply these fractal tools and concepts to other study systems. The end game here is to develop a monitoring system to indicate performance losses in various animal systems, both in the wild for conservation and management and in captivity for animal welfare and enrichment.
