膜小胞は脂質二重層から成り、ほぼ全ての生物の細胞が産生する。近年微生物の膜小胞が免疫からの忌避や、疎水性物質の輸送など、重要な生理学的機能をもつことが分かってきた。一方、その形成機構には不明な点が多い。膜小胞の形成にはタンパク質による能動的な細胞膜変形反応が必要であると考えられる。本研究では窒素固定細菌を含む微生物の膜小胞形成機構の解明、並びに膜小胞の形態と機能の制御を通じた有用物質生産を目指す。

All domains of life produce membrane vesicle composed of lipid bilayer structure. Recently, bacterial membrane vesicle (MV) has been known to have important physiological functions such as evasion from host immune system or transportation of hydrophobic signal substances. However, the mechanism of MV production remains to be clarified. Active membrane deformation reactions caused by unknown proteins should be necessary for MV production. We aim to elucidate MV formation mechanism of microbes including nitrogen-fixing bacteria and establish a new basic biotechnology to control cell membrane structure and function. The findings will enable us to produce useful substances and transport them through MV.
