重力の量子論の理論的研究を行っている。特に時空間を創発するような理論として正準形式によるテンソル模型の研究を行っている。特に最近は、数値データ解析で使われているテンソルのランク分解やパーシステントホモロジーなどの最新の数学的テクニックをテンソル模型の解析に使うことにより、テンソル模型の時間的ダイナミクスを時空間のダイナミクスに読み直し、時空の創発現象や一般相対論との対応関係などを研究している。この研究においては量子正準テンソル模型の厳密な波動関数の性質の理解が重要であり、理論的および数値的アプローチによりそれを明らかしようとしている。

I am investigating quantum gravity from theoretical view points. I am especially interested in a tensor model in the canonical formalism, which is supposed to generate macroscopic spacetimes and general relativistic systems on them. Recently I am working on applying the mathematical techniques in recent numerical data analysis such as tensor-rank decomposition and persistent homology to interpret the time-dependent dynamics of the canonical tensor model as the dynamics of the generation of macroscopic spacetimes and general relativistic systems on them. In this research understanding the properties of the exact wave functions of the quantum canonical tensor model is indispensable, and this is being approached by theoretical and numerical methods.

宇宙初期やブラックホールなどの重力の効果が極端に大きい時空領域における現象の記述や、我々の宇宙がなぜどのように生じたのか、ブラックホールや時空間とは何かなどの根本的疑問を明らかにするためには、重力の量子論が必要と考えられているが、そのような基礎理論は未だに構築されていない。その主な原因は、巨視的物理と微視的物理においてそれぞれ正しいと信じられている一般相対論と量子論がお互いに相容れない構造を持つ事が原因である。それらの整合性が得られれば、基礎理論全体が書き換えられ、人類がその英知の新しい段階に達するであろうと考えられているが、長年の研究にも関わらず、未だに、研究者の多くが納得するような方向性すら定まっていない。この困難な基礎的問題を考える一つの方針として最近盛んに言われているのは、時空間は基本的なものではなく、より基本的な自由度から創発されるというものである。私は正準形式に基づくテンソル模型やファジー空間の概念などを考えることにより、時空間が創発されるという描像に基づいて、重力の量子論の研究を行っている。特に最近の成果として、テンソルランク分解やパーシステントホモロジーなどの最新の数学的および数値データ解析の手法を用いることにより、正準テンソル模型におけるテンソルの時間的ダイナミクスを、時空間のダイナミクスとして理解する手法を導いた。これにより、これまでは抽象的であったテンソル模型の時空間描像が、定量的かつ具体的なビジュアルな形でも記述できるようになった。またもう一つの成果として正準テンソル模型の厳密な波動関数がリー群的対称性を持つ配位において強いピークを持つことを見出したが、時空間にはローレンツ、ドジッター、ゲージなどのリー群対称性が付随しているというよく知られている事実があり、時空間の生成が正準テンソル模型の波動関数のピークとして記述される可能性が現実味を帯びてきている。今後の研究方向としては、こららの二つの成果を併せ、先の数学的テクニックを波動関数のピークに対応する配位に適用することにより、ピークの時空間的解釈を明らかにしたい。

To describe phenomena in strong gravitational space-time regions such as at the birth of our universe or near black holes, to explain why and how our universe began, and to answer some fundamental questions such as what is a black hole and what is the spacetime, quantum theory of gravity is considered to be necessary. However, presently, such a fundamental theory has not yet been constructed. The main reason for this is that general relativity and quantum mechanics, which are believed to be the correct descriptions in large and small scales, respectively, are mutually incompatible. So, if the two theories have been consistently merged, all the aspects of the present fundamental theory will be replaced and the human kind will achieve a new stage of wisdom. But, irrespective of long-time efforts, presently, there is not even a single good research direction which most researchers agree on. In such circumstances, one of the current popular directions is to suppose that space-time is not a fundamental entity but is a phenomenon emergent from more fundamental degrees of freedom. I am doing researches on quantum gravity based on this idea of emergent space-time in terms of a tensor model in the canonical formalism and the notion of fuzzy spaces. One of our recent achievements is the development of a mathematical procedure to extract spacetime pictures from the time-dependent dynamics of the canonical tensor model. This procedure is based on the new mathematical and numerical data analysis techniques such as tensor-rank decompositions and persistent homology. These techniques extract quantitative concrete spacetime pictures from rather abstract time-dependent tensors in the dynamics of the canonical tensor model. As another achievement, we have found that the exact wave functions of the canonical tensor model have strong peaks at the configurations invariant under Lie-group symmetries. This result is quite encouraging for quantum gravity because, as well known, Lie-group symmetries such as Lorentz, de-Sitter, and gauge, are accompanied with our spacetimes. These successful achievements encourage us to carry out the next research direction of extracting spacetime interpretations from the configurations corresponding to the wave function peaks by using the mathematical procedure mentioned above.
