京大工学部卒業(1976年)、同大学院工学研究科修士(1978年)および博士課程(1981年)修了後、福井大学(工学部)助手(1982年)、長岡技術科学大学(生物系)助教授(1990年)、東京農工大学(工学部)助教授(1995年)・教授(1999年)を経て、2000年京大大学院(農学研究科)教授を併任、2001年より現職専任。1985-86年にはカナダMcGill大学留学。高分子系における光物理化学と分子集合構造・モルホロジー等を研究の後、天然高分子の機能研究へと発展移行。

木材構成成分および関連する各種生物由来素材を対象に、それらを次世代型の新しい機能材料の構築ベースとして発展させるべく、物理化学的な分子・材料特性を究める基礎研究と種々の化学的プロセシング法の開拓を含めた応用研究を推進している。特に、環境・生体適合性の高い異種素材との微視的な複合化手法を駆使しつつ、バイオマスを“モダンな”生分解性材料、液晶光学材料、磁性材料、物質分離材料などへと導く高機能化路線を展開している。
